I believe there was an article that talked shit about Sgt Pepper and that when the Beatles made Sgt Pepper's, they made pop for men and that music for girls is silly and music for men is important. That article basically talked shit on not only the Beatles but also women as well as if women can't make important music as well. Here's the article: https://www.salon.com/2017/05/29/against-sgt-pepper-the-beatles-classic-made-pop-seem-male-nerdy-and-important-and-that-wasnt-a-good-thing/

Oh that's interesting !! I wish I'd seen this article before I'd started writing - funny how it even mentions girls getting laughed at for liking Duran Duran.

Loved this article! My teenage years were spent hip deep in prog - I saw Zeppelin, Rush, Genesis … the whole bit. You are right about the lack of female representation. The nearest female band I could think of to prog was heart (particularly the first two albums). They certainly tick many of those boxes. In music, misogyny is a given and this is certainly true of prog - though from memory, it seems to me that much of the “man music” was an attempt by awkward teenagers to not engage with the scary world of women! I mean, why would you when you can obsess about the temples of syrinx! 😳🤔 Gx

Thanks for reading as always, Ginny! I've never really delved into Heart beyond the hits, so I might have to now. I definitely agree with you that within this "man music" there is some undercurrents of awkward teenagers trying to stay in their own non-female bubble - better stick to the planets of the Solar Federation after all!
